Washington and Lee University Commons - The school from which George Washington and Robert E Lee descended and originally established in 1749, Washington and Lee Commons is a new five-story, ~100,000 square-foot project on drilled pier and conventional foundations. Award winning project includes 300' x 10' pedestrial and light vehicle bridge linking existing to new construction, and 13,000 SF underground service area with 50' spans supporting landscaping.
Cocke Hall - University of Virginia - One of three buildings built in 1898 to compensate for the loss of the Rotunda annex in 1895, the renovation of Cocke Hall (a historic preservation project) houses the philosophy department and the department of Classics at UVA. The buildings Cocke Hall, Rouss Hall, and Cabell Hall permanently enclosed the Lawn, which is part of Thomas Jefferson's Academical Village.
Patrick D. Cupp Stadium - A multi-use stadium completed in 2003, it is the largest soccer/track facility in the Big South Conference located in Radford, Virginia on the campus of Radford University. Cupp Stadium seats 5,000 with a roof over the premium seats. The stadium is used by Radford's soccer and athletics teams.
Luck Stone Corporate Headquarters - A 60,000 square-foot three-level expansion and renovation to its existing 35-year old 25,000 square-foot corporate office, it includes a large open atrium with a monumental staircase and a flexible dining level for 300 people. The renovation is designed to hold 250 associates.
Robins Nature & Visitor Center at Maymont - Dedicated to native wildlife of the Commonwealth and home to several animals including river otters, turtles and fish. The $21 million, 25,000-square-foot project also includes several small structures for patron interaction and viewing, a boardwalk, pedestrian bridge, concession stand, amphitheater, a 20 foot waterfall and 13 aquariums. Structural system includes heavy-timber trusses.
Wilsdorf Hall - University of Virginia - Wilsdorf Hall - formerly known as the Materials Science Engineering and Nanotechnology building (MSENT) - of UVA School of Engineering and Apllied Science, is a 99,000 square-foot, $43 million five-story structure that links the materials science and chemical engineering buildings and is for collaborative research in materials science and materials engineering, chemical engineering, and nanotechnology.
Burning Daylight Stables - A two-story 26,000 square-foot horse barn, home to over 28 thoroughbreds bred and trained to become champion racehorses. Includes cast-in-place concrete walls supporting heavy timber trusses, administrative center, functional observation tower with suspended steel spiral stair, and rainwater harvesting, storage and distribution system.
Kings Dominion Volcano, The Blast Rollercoaster - Existing man-made volcano modified to retrofit new rollercoaster. $20 million construction project. Debuted in summer of 1998 as the world's first inverted linear induction motor-launched rollercoaster and tallest inversion at 155 feet. Complex structural design of foundation system, new structures, and modifications to existing mountain frame required advanced 3-D modeling.
The Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center - AIA Richmond Chapter 2006 Design Merit Award Winner. The CMWJCC is a multi-use facility acting as a cultural, educational and recreation center for Richmond's Jewish community. 106,000 SF (30,000 SF new) construction completed fall of 2005.
Wertland Square Apartments - Wertland Square is located on the historic "Corner" in Charlottesville, VA. It includes 50 units in both 2 and 4-bedroom floor plans. 90,000 square-foot, four-story, wood-framed construction over composite steel / concrete structure over basement parking. 2007 Builder's Choice Award and BRAC Student Community of the Year Winner.
VMI Leadership and Ethics Center - The Virginia Military Institute Center includes a 500-seat auditorium, banquet seating for 800 people, meeting rooms, and other amenities. 45,435 SF construction project with a $200 million budget. The sloping site requires multiple level changes with concrete retaining walls to facilitate construction. The floor system is composite steel and roof framing is structural steel and steel bar joists.
Alta Great Bridge Apartments - $20 million apartment complex located in Chesapeake, Virginia including nine three-story residential buildings, 192 units total, plus a clubhouse and two maintenance buildings totalling 225,000 SF, all wood frame construction.
North Cross School - Fox + Associates' first BIM (Building Information Modeling) project; designed entirely in 3-D with Autodesk's Revit Structure 2009 and Bentley's RAM Steel software. Currently North Cross is a work in progress; construction to be completed by the end of summer, 2009.
Manassas Park Schools - Four projects totalling $75 million from 1997 through present. 400,000 sf, multi-level high school, elementary schools and high school additions. Structural steel frame with concrete on metal deck floors, pre-engineered gymnasium. Award winning architecture.
First USA Bank Center and Parking Structure - Wilmington, Delaware - $62 million (3) Three-story office buildings, 440,000 sf, composite steel/concrete. Multi-use retail mall connector, 50,000 sf (3) Two-level parking structures for about 1,800 cars, precast concrete. Project cancelled at 90% construction documents.
Anthem Davis Center North / Parking Deck - Richmond, Virginia - $43 million major structural renovations to existing office building, 265,000 sf including twin elevator shafts. New parking structure on three levels for 1,125 cars; precast double T concrete construction.
Wilson Memorial / Stuarts Draft Schools - Fishersville / Stuarts Draft, Virginia Two almost identical schools totalling $35 million comprising new gymnasiums, locker rooms, cafeterias, administration areas and science wings, about 84,000 sf total and extensive renovations to existing schools, about 226,000 sf total. All construction is single-story steel framed and/or masonry bearing wall. Honor Award for Excellence - Central VA Chapter of the AIA
Addison at Crater Woods Apartments - Petersburg, Virginia - $30 million new 300,000 sf, three-stories with basement, wood-framed, 250 unit apartment complex. Freestanding garage, clubhouse, pool, and one-story maintenance building.
Cougar Upper Elementary School and Pre-K Addition - Manassas, Virginia $30 million 10,500 sf single-story, pre-kindergarten building and 121,000 sf three-story, steel-framed building with classrooms, administrative, media, cafeteria, gymnasium, etc. Concrete deck on steel bar joists, braced frame extensive reinforced concrete retaining walls, conventional foundations, storm water management structures LEED Certified Project. Honor Award: James River Green Building Council
Freedom High School - South Riding, Virginia - $29+ million steel-framed structure and load bearing masonry designed to provide the community use of 450-seat cafeteria, 1000-seat auditorium (fine arts center), 2,250-seat competition track and lighted football field, 400 seat baseball and softball fields as well as six tennis courts.
Briar Woods High School - Ashburn, Virginia - $26 million steel-framed structure and load bearing masonry designed to provide the community use of 450-seat cafeteria, 1000-seat auditorium (fine arts center), 2,250-seat competition track and lighted football field, 400 seat baseball and softball fields as well as six tennis courts.
Rockbridge County Courthouse - Lexington, Virginia - $25 million new 57,000 sf traditional design courthouse located within a few blocks of the historical courthouse. An attached 144 car, multi-level parking garage with a landscaped suspended plaza serves the courthouse. The courthouse is a structural steel frame with composite steel floors. The parking garage is precast concrete.
Meadowbrook High School Additions - Chesterfield, Virginia - $25 million additions and renovations to the existing school including a 900-seat auditorium. Renovations to the dining facility. The new additions total about 85,000 sf and the renovations involve about 185,000 sf. 2006 State Excellence in Design Award
SEI Investments - Phase IV Parking Deck - Oaks, Pennsylvania - $25 million parking garage on four levels, 400,000 sf, 1,200 cars, partially below grade. Precast double-T superstructure, reinforced concrete retaining walls and foundations, provision for skywalks.
Daniel Morgan Middle School - Winchester, Virginia - $25 million 140,000 sf addition of a new gymnasium, cafeteria, administration area, and a two-story classroom wing. 135,000 sq. ft of renovations. UVA's College at Wise - Wise, Virginia - $20 million residence Halls (2 levels), Science Center (4 levels plus basement), and Student Center (5 levels plus mechanical level). Hollow core/masonry bearing walls, composite construction/steel frame. Complex deep, reinforced concrete basements and foundations.
Fairfield Middle School - Richmond, Virginia - $20 million new 4,000 sf administration building and renovation of 17 individual buildings.
Manassas Park Middle School - Manassas Park, Virginia - $18 million 120,000 sf new construction with separate maintenance, gymnasium, and academic buildings. Construction type is pre-engineered metal building, bar joist and concrete deck and composite construction on steel frame. Features long span plate girders supporting library and trusses over about 25,000 sf of renovated space. Honor Award for Excellence - Central VA Chapter of the AIA and Merit Award for Renov.
Poquoson Elementary School - Poquoson, Virginia - $17.5 million new 90,000 sf elementary school with gymnasium, cafeteria, and media center. Steel frame on bearing masonry with butterfly roof over gymnasium in wood and steel. LEED Certified Project. Lucky Strike Building/Tobacco Row - Richmond, Virginia - Evaluation of existing 80-year-old wood/steel and concrete building for retail, parking, and residential development.
Orange County High School Additions and Alterations - $13 million major renovation to 122,000 sf existing one-three story building. Addition of 25,000 sf of new space containing math/science labs, cafeteria and classrooms. Concrete floors on steel bar joists on structural steel framing. Award Winner - VA School Boards Assoc. Exhibition of School Arch.
Westbrook Office Building - Chester Co., Pennsylvania - $12 million office building, 200,000 sq. ft on three levels. Fully composite construction with non-uniform plan layout requiring complex design of lateral frames and expansion joints. Atrium has cable tied arches. Perimeter walls are self-supporting precast concrete.
Jefferson Ridge Apartments - Charlottesville, Virginia - $12 million, twelve building apartment complex. Three-story, wood-frame with concrete retaining wall basements.
Manassas Park High School - $11.2 million new high school, approximately 110,000 sf, on three levels. Includes large gymnasium and round 400-650 seat, multi-purpose auditorium. Structural steel frame, masonry infill, concrete on metal deck.
Charlottesville Transit Service - New 35,000 sf bus maintenance complex project consists of a 9,000 sf renovated administrative / office building, a new 15,000 sf bus maintenance facility, a new bus wash and detailing building, a new fueling building and covered bus parking. Under a part of the maintenance facility, a concrete cistern stores the roof rainwater to use for irrigation. LEED Certified. Merit Award: James River Green Building Council
Atwater 1200 - Conshohocken, Pennsylvania - $9 million new office building, two levels, 150,000 sf. Steel frame with composite steel/concrete floors and tilt-up bearing wall construction. First of 15 building complex.
Appomattox Elementary School - $9 million, approximately 70,000 sf of new construction. Concrete slab on grade. Structural steel frame with bar joists for supported slabs and low-slope roof decks. Fire retardant treated wood trusses for sloped roofs.
UVA College at Wise, New Student Center Wise - $8.5 million student center on five levels. Deep basement (30') with heavy concrete retaining walls. Elevated floors are precast hollow core planks on structural steel frame/masonry bearing walls. Light gauge metal roof trusses. 38,000 sf.
Brownsville Elementary School - Crozet, Virginia - $8.2 million 31,950 sf single-story, steel frame addition consisting of two classroom wings, café addition and a pre-engineered steel building, gymnasium with a mechanical mezzanine. LEED Registered Project.
Scatena Residence - Charlottesville - $8 million three-story house in classical tradition. Fully composite, steel frame with masonry shear walls. Partial basement with RC retaining walls.
Stafford County Schools - (AG Wright and Stafford Middle School) Stafford Middle School Gym Addition (3 mil cost): The addition was a freestanding one-court gym and an attached weight room consisting of about 7,000 sf. The structure was load bearing CMU walls and open-web bar joists for the roof AG Wright Middle School Classroom Addition (5 mil cost): The addition consisted of science labs and a media center. The structure was load bearing CMU walls and open-web bar joists for the roof. The addition contained about 14,800 sf.
Greene County William Monroe Middle / High School - $8 million, 40,000 sf of expansion of classrooms for both the high school and middle school, expansion of the high school media center, cafeteria, and a new competition gymnasium. The high school classroom addition is a two-story steel-framed structure. The gymnasium is steel framed and designed for future expansion.
Crown Colony, Forest Family Physicians, & Staunton River Family Physicians - Hanover and Lynchburg, Virginia - $7.8 million 8,000 - 12,000 sq. ft, one and two-levels, wood-framed, medical office buildings.
Ft. Defiance High School Addition - $7.5 million addition 65,000 sf of new space on two levels plus 14,000 sf gym. Renovation of the existing building.
New Science Center UVA College at Wise - Virginia - $7.1 million science center on three levels plus basement. Founded on drilled piers. Steel frame, steel brace and masonry shear walls, composite floor construction, light gauge metal roof trusses. 34,000 sf of new construction and 27,000 sf renovations.
Burley Middle School Renovations and Additions - Charlottesville, Virginia - $7 million new two-story addition of about 30,000 sf. Miscellaneous renovations of about 16,000 sf.
Manassas Park High School - $7 million three-story addition to the high school, 42,000 sf. Steel frame, concrete floors on bar joists, diagonal steel lateral frame system, conventional foundations, mechanical basement.
Charlottesville Boy's and Girl's Club - This new, two level recreation center is 24,000 sf set into the side of a hill. The facility has a gym on the lower level with classrooms and activity rooms on the main level. The structure is a steel frame with masonry exterior walls. The masonry walls act as shear walls.
Markel American - Richmond, Virginia - $6.6 million office building, 110,000 sf on four levels. Braced steel frame with concrete on bar joist. Brick veneer on metal studs.
Germanna Community College - Fredericksburg, Virginia - $6.5 million new college campus, three-story, 75,000 sf steel-framed, educational building with concrete floors on metal deck supported by bar joist and steel beams. One level below grade.
Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) - $6.5 million new 24,000 sf single-story, office building. Steel frame with clerestory framing entrance, canopy and lobby.
Gallison Hall Pool and Tennis Additions - Charlottesville, Virginia - $6 million new indoor pool pavilion and tennis buildings at this private residence, including extensive landscape retaining walls.
Crown Colony Office Building - Hanover, Virginia - $6 million 8,000 sf, two level, wood frame office building.
UVA School of Architecture - Campbell Hall - $6 million project - Add faculty office space to existing concrete frame and brick building. Initial phases consist of narrow office bar along the south edge of the building and a re-worked entry with exhibition space to the east. AIA Richmond Honor Award.
Buckingham Courthouse Additions and Renovations - $6 million new three-story addition about 30,000 sf and renovation of the courthouse. Steel frame composite construction and extensive retaining walls.
Averett University Student Center - Danville, Virginia - $6 million new Student Center on four levels, 42,000 sf includes a coffee shop, convenience store, game room, TV room, computer lab and a central dining facility. Steel frame with composite floors, basements with extensive retaining walls. Danville Courthouse Addition - $5.5 million two-story addition to an existing courthouse. The addition is built over an existing plaza with parking below which required very complex foundation and reinforcement of existing elevated slab design. Single-story jail addition.
Johnson Williams Middle School - Berryville, Virginia - $5.5 million complete renovation of existing 73,000 sf school consisting of 24,000 sf addition, and an 18,500 sf new two-story masonry building.
Bridgewater College - Virginia - $5.5 million three-story, plus loft, dormitory complex, 56,066 sf. Hollow core planks on CMU bearing walls, steel frame roof.
Bank of America New Transformer Facility - Richmond, Virginia - $5.5 million new transformer facility. Structural steel frame with masonry perimeter walls.
Buffalo Gap High School Addition - Augusta County - $5.5 million addition of 35,000 sf of new space plus 12,000 sf gymnasium. Renovation of the existing building.
Westwood Hills Elementary School - Waynesboro, Virginia - $5.25 million additions and alterations to elementary school. Steel frame construction.
James Madison University - Hoffman Hall Renovation - Harrisonburg, Virginia - $5.2 million renovation of existing 35,000 sf, four-story dormitory and one-story 5,000 sf commons area. Modify existing roof framing and review buildings for current seismic requirements.
Farmington Country Club Renovation - $5 million renovation, alterations, and additions to existing club. New multi-purpose fitness center. Concrete on metal deck, joints and beam framing, custom wood.
Clements Middle School Additions and Renovations - Prince George County - $5 million complete renovation of existing school with 39,000 sf of new additions including a science wing and gymnasium.
Henrico County Cultural Arts Center - Glen Allen, Virginia - $5 million renovation and adaptation of 40,000 sf, 80-year-old school into a performing and visual arts center.
Sherwood Mausoleum - Salem, Virginia - $5 million new mausoleum and memorial consisting of 2,600 crypts and 260 columbaria. Received ACI Excellence in Concrete Award - Commercial.
University of Richmond Weinstein Hall - $5 million three-story addition to the existing Social Science Building, 25,000 sf. Composite steel/concrete floors and structural steel roof. Design and detailing of architectural Indiana Limestone under separate contract.
Drop Zone at Kings Dominion - Doswell, Virginia - $5 million 300 ft. high, vertical drop ride. Massive reinforced concrete foundation on steel piles.
James City County Recreation Center - Williamsburg - $5 million steel frame structural system for this 52,000 sf renovation/addition to the existing recreation center. Field house has full-size basketball courts and suspended running track.
Louisa County High School Renovation - Mineral, Virginia - $4.8 million partial renovation of the existing high school and a new 15,000 sf commons area addition connecting the two existing school complexes. Structural system consisted of steel-framed roof and exposed concrete columns.
Manassas Park Police Station - $4.5 million new 22,500 sf police station on three levels. Partially below grade. Building frame is structural steel with concrete floors on bar joists, concrete retaining walls, masonry shear walls and brick / stud non-bearing walls.
ICI Americas New Research Lab - Wilmington, Delaware - $4 million polymer research facility. Single-story conventional steel frame. Complex mechanical equipment on roof. (Not built)
Libbie Place Shopping Center - Richmond, Virginia - $4 million four-phase, single-story shopping center, 120,000 sf. Precast concrete panels on structural steel frame.
Averett University Convocation Center - Danville, Virginia - $4 million new 56,000 sf convocation center. Encloses three full-size basketball courts.
Prince George High School - $3.5 million partial renovation of existing school and additional science classrooms and chiller enclosure.
Cub Scout Camp - Goochland, Virginia - $3.5 million 13,000 sf, new "themed" scout camp consisting of main lodge, nature center, shower/pool house (castle), residences (western fort and indian tepees), pirate ship, and camp buildings constructed of glulam, conventional wood framing or CMU.
UVA Crockett Hall - $3.5 million major renovation of historic, two-story, student residence, 15,000 sf. Wood-framed structure with stone exterior walls. Completed through Design Development.
UVA College at Wise, Residence Hall - $3.3 million residence hall on three levels. Precast hollow core slabs on masonry bearing walls. 27,000 sf.
Charlottesville Contemporary Arts Building - $3.5 million, four-story, 20,000 sf building framed with load-bearing CMU and precast hollow-core structure. The drama theater and balcony is framed with structural steel.
Garrisonville Elementary Additions - $3.2 million 20,000 sf addition to the existing elementary school.
West End Baptist Church - Dinwiddie County - $3.1 million 29,000 sf church consisting of an octahedral sanctuary and one story classroom/educational area and fellowship hall. The sanctuary has an intermediate floor and tall cupola.
Sheltering Arms Rehabilitation Center - Chesterfield County - $3 million one-story building with 29,500 sf of vocational area, day area, and pool building. Complex steel-framed roof structure on sloping site.
Pleasants Hardware - Richmond - $3 million new hardware store, 65,000 sf masonry bearing/shear walls, structural steel frame.
VPI - Biotechnology Lab Building - Blacksburg - $3 million Biotechnology Laboratory Building: 45,000 sf on five levels. Cast-in-place concrete frame.
Radford University - $3 million three-story, 33,000 sf steel frame structural system for this academic and conference facility.
Radford University Track & Soccer Stadium - $3 million new soccer stadium and two-story support building below with locker/training rooms. Basement/field level with offices and public restrooms.
Waynesboro High School - $3 million partial renovation of the existing high school and a new 8,000 sf dining facility.
Smith Mountain Lake - Four Square Office/Retail Building - Franklin County - $3 million 30,000 sf one and two-story, 30,000 sf office/retail buildings composed of a steel frame and steel bar joist floor supporting a concrete floor.
UVA Baseball Stadium - $3 million renovation and expansion of current baseball field. Includes a 1,600 seat canopied grandstand, new stadium lighting, locker room, clubhouse, pressbox, and concession area.
Jouett Middle School Additions and Renovations - Charlottesville, Virginia - $3 million renovation of 15,000 sq. ft of existing school including a new one-story, science classroom addition of 17,000 sf.
Atlantic Life Building & G.C. Murphy Block Demolition - Prepared structural drawings and specs for the demolition of two separate city blocks with misc. buildings ranging from 100-year-old brick and wood frame to 6 and 7-story concrete and steel frame buildings with basements. Survey buildings for effect on adjacent properties to remain and provide accurate bid data. Compile all discipline's documents into project manual. Coordinate structural requirements with other disciplines. Resolve issues arising during demolition and provide SI services.
VPI AREC Lab Facility - Blacksburg - $3 million 6,200 sf single-story lab building including offices, two labs, and lab storage rooms. The structure is a structural steel frame with bar joists. The roof top equipment is concealed by louvered screens.
Boar's Head Processing Facility - Jarratt, Virginia - $3 million turkey processing facility. Cleaning, processing, cooking, packaging, and shipping. Offices on mezzanine.
Gandy Elementary School Addition and Renovations - Hanover - $2.6 million 5,000 sf addition, new roofs and canopies added to existing buildings.
Chatham Hall New Science Building - $2.6 million new 19,000 sf science building. Structural system consists of load bearing masonry walls and steel bar joists.
Ecoff Elementary School - Chesterfield - $2.6 million new one-story classroom addition totaling about 11,500 sf. The construction is load-bearing CMU with open-web bar joists for the roof structure.
Albemarle County PREP (Piedmont Regional Educational Program) - Charlottesville, Virginia - $2.6 million 20,000 sf school for County-wide special educational purposes.
Carlisle School Addition - Martinsville - $2.5 million one-story classroom building with half basement, 30,000 sf. One-story lab addition to existing building.
Waterworks Wavepool at Kings Dominion - Doswell, Virginia - $2.5 million 6,000 sf filter building and 35,000 sf wave pool. Complex water retaining reinforced concrete construction with bar joist roof structure. Pressurized concrete plenums designed to sanitary code requirements.
VPI - Addition to Cochrane Dining Hall - Blacksburg, Virginia - $2.5 million 8,000 sf addition to existing cafeteria. Cafeteria incorporated numerous thematic food pavilions.
Nickelodeon at Kings Dominion - Doswell, Virginia - $2.5 million multi-building theme project. Diverse structural systems in wood and steel.
Beth Ahabah Additions - Richmond - $2.5 million 8,000 sf of renovations to existing buildings for new classroom spaces and additions for new meeting hall and classrooms.
Downtown YWCA Renovation - Richmond - $2.5 million renovation and modernization of Downtown Richmond's 1913 YWCA.

Patrick Henry High School - Hanover, Virginia - $2.2 million new 7,400 sf classroom addition and partial renovations.
American Family Fitness - Colonial Heights - $2.1 million one-story pre-engineered structure with 23 ft. eave height. Architectural canopies on three sides and stepped interior slabs.
Tyson Foods Production Facility - Glen Allen - $2 million pet food processing and storage facility. Processing, cold storage, mechanical, and support spaces. Prime consultant.
Kidzville at Kings Dominion - Virginia - $2 million miscellaneous diverse structures for new theme park, includes foundation system for kiddie roller coaster. Required very creative structural engineering.
Fork Union Military Academy Dining Hall - Virginia - $2 million design of new 24,000 sf addition dining hall.
Lynchburg General District Courts - $2 million design of structural framing and foundation systems for this courtroom addition overtop the existing General District Courts/Public Safety facility.
